Beginning at the Beginning

The origins of this series of articles are found in my experiences in private practice for 35 years. I observe people’s actions and words during their day to day lives – we, as humans, tend to trundle along, mesmerized by the external world, lulled into a trance, perfunctory in our behaviors of watching mindless drivel projected onto screens “out there”, outside of ourselves, eating the foods that look SO DELICIOUS on those screens, taking the drugs that promise relief from our aches and pains, fears and worries, wearing the clothes that the beautiful airbrushed people wear, thinking the thoughts that the talking heads tell us to think. Then, one day, the crisis comes. A diagnosis. An injury. An emotional loss, death, divorce, or getting fired from a job. Something happens to us that catapults us into looking for, searching for, hoping and praying for a “miracle” to set us free, to return us to the old familiar way of being. I’ve heard it thousands of times: “I need a miracle!”

STOP! Just like the title of a country music song “Looking for Love in All the Wrong Places” we are conditioned now to look outside for validation, relief of suffering, and fulfillment, we continue to look outwardly when the body falls apart, when our life crumbles around us. The answer is NOT out there. The answer is hidden within the 100 trillion cells that make up your body, each one of them carrying coiled strands of DNA that can direct and conduct the process of healing and regeneration when properly nurtured and supported, when “cultivated” to do so.

In considering where to start our discussion on demystifying the miraculous, it seemed best to start at the beginning! How did YOU get started in this life? Unless you were conceived through in vitro fertilization or some process other than the “original” method of procreation, there was a journey of monumental proportions to which you have probably never given much thought. Indeed, YOU came into being as a result of the union of the smallest cell in the human body, one male spermatozoon, and the largest cell in the human body, the female egg or ovum. No news there! However, the mechanism which produced that outcome, is nothing short of miraculous.

Horace Mann, Massachusetts Senator, lawyer and American education reformer from the 1800’s is famous for this quote: “Be ashamed to die until you have won some victory for Humanity!” Since you’re reading this article, you most likely have an interest in making a difference in the world, contributing to the progression of mankind, “winning some victory for Humanity”. But, perhaps you also feel inadequate or unsure, maybe incapable of rising to the occasion. Possibly you are too shy or reticent to move forward, feeling like the odds are stacked against you.

Maybe you’ve even bought a Florida Lotto ticket in hopes of getting a jump start, a financial boost that will let you bring your own unique contribution to the world. Have you noticed on the back of the ticket what the odds of winning are? The answer is 1 in 22,957,480. Do you feel like the odds are always against you? Does it sometimes feel like the odds are greater than the 23 million to one odds of winning the Lotto? Is your perception of these daunting odds stopping you from bringing that gift, that victory, forward and making a contribution? Would you be willing to compete and win out against, not 23 million others, but 60 or 70 million others in climbing to the top of a mountain and down into the deep crater at the top, across 3 to 4 miles of rugged terrain to deliver your special package of VICTORY to Humanity? Would you? Could you?

Have you seen how high the Jackpot for the Mega Millions lottery game gets to be sometimes? It was up to over $500 million recently! You could do a lot of good with all that money, couldn’t you?

But…..what are the odds of winning this one? These odds are 1 in 258,890,850. What if you knew that, in order to bring YOUR special gift to the world, you would have to swim, upstream, in a river that was flowing through a dark cave for 8 miles? And, you would be competing with 259 million other people to get there? Would you even start the journey? Could you do it?

And, the Powerball Jackpot has actually topped $1.5 BILLION in recent times. But, with the change in the Powerball number allocation, the odds have also climbed to a daunting 1 in 292,201,338! Would you fight against the odds, hike across 5 to 6 miles of undulating, muddy muck to reach your goal, getting there ahead of 292 million other people, just to bring your own uncommon offerings to the world for its betterment? Would you be up for the challenge? Will you do it?

I have good news for you. You have already beaten those odds, and more! You began this life, this journey, as the union of that one little tiny sperm cell and that one large egg. For most naturally conceived babies, this union happened up near the beginning of the Fallopian tubes that hang out over the ovaries. That one, single sperm, swimming frantically upstream against somewhere between 70 million and 400 million other sperm cells, is only ½ of a micron in length.

I DID THE MATH.

The mound of the cervix, which the sperm first has to climb over, is 5 cm across the dimension that the sperm has to traverse. The human step length is about ½ of its height. If the sperm cell were walking the same distance as an upright human, proportionally, it would equate to ambulating across almost 4 miles, climbing up the mountain of the cervix and then going down into the valley, through the opening into the uterus.

THEN, it had to get across the wide expanse of the uterus to reach the entrance to the Fallopian tube. That distance is another 7.5 cm (about 3 inches), the equivalent of another 6 miles, approximately.

But, the journey is not over yet! In most pregnancies, the union of sperm and egg takes place in the upper reaches of the tube – an arduous trek, AGAINST the rhythmic contractions that are trying to move the egg downstream to meet the sperm. This is a distance of another 10 cm or about 4 inches, the same as swimming UPSTREAM for approximately 8 miles.

In order for YOU, that very special, unique YOU to be sitting comfortably reading this article, to join us in making a contribution to the elevation of consciousness on this planet, you have won the race against as many as 400 million others, AGAINST ALL ODDS.

NOW, as you relax after reading this article, move into your busy day or into a night of slumber, you can go forward trusting that the same power, the same wisdom, that drew these magical two cells together and grew them into the 100 trillion that make up who you are now is comfortably digesting the food that you ate today in order to turn it into the VICTORIES of tomorrow. That same miraculous intelligence is repairing cells, regenerating energy and restoring your vitality without you having to give it a second thought. However, it thrives on gratitude and appreciation. Begin to notice how your cultivation of that intelligence, that wisdom, through attention and gratefulness brings even more rewards in the form of abundance all around you.

Keep this in mind: if you unwind the strand of DNA in each of those cells mentioned above, it is approximately 6 feet long. Thus, the total length of the DNA in the roughly 100 trillion cells that make up the human body would reach to the sun and back 70 times, with some left over to travel around the earth a few hundred times. And all of that DNA is encoded to program the formation of proteins that make up the hormones, neuropeptides, tissues, organs and structures that make us the miraculous organisms that we are.

Make it a great life. Make a difference with your LIGHT. The Miracle Is YOU!
