when I share the concept of The Miracle Is You, I’m often asked what exactly does that mean. First, I think it best to start any conversation of significance by making sure that the important terms are defined and understood in the context of that conversation. The definition of “miracle” that I wish to operate from in this discussion is well stated by the 4th Century Saint of the Catholic church, St. Augustine, who said:
“There is no such thing as a miracle which violates natural law. There are only occurrences which violate our limited knowledge of natural law.”
-St. Augustine*
But, what does that mean?!? What does it mean that you are the Miracle; that the Miracle is YOU? In the context of The Miracle Is You, it means that there are amazing and miraculous things already, always happening inside of you for all of the time that you are alive. In the spirit of St Augustine, it means that, when you really understand the majesty of the processes that keep you alive, they would appear to be miraculous, outside of what we know about natural law. I assert that “Natural Law’ is, in itself, miraculous. Indeed, these miraculous things are happening inside AND all around you, right down to the process of plants releasing Oxygen for us to breathe and consuming the CO2 that we exhale.
But, why should that matter? What does that mean to YOU? In this context, and in life, it matters because understanding and appreciating this miraculous process brings you automatically to the potential of, the space of gratitude. If you would prefer to have a healthy heart, are you more likely to have that if you “bless your heart” or if you “curse your heart”? If you need to heal from a chronic lung condition, are you more likely to heal if you are ignoring the quantity and quality of the air that comes in and out of your lungs or if you put conscious attention on and give thanks for the breath that sustains you?
How do I know that “The Miracle Is YOU!”? Why do I care? Why is this important to me? If it is true for you, then it is also true for me. If it is true for me and for you, then it is true for every other human on this planet. Every day in my work as a Chiropractic Physician, I see miraculous things happen in the people who walk through my door. That amazing intelligence that is living and breathing them heals them of physical, chemical and emotional wounds and illnesses; it simply needs to be approached with respect and to have the obstacles removed in order for it to function properly. I know that you and I are THE MIRACLE because I see it every day. I choose to focus on that rather than the differences that may only appear real.
